Life Lessons in the Italian Supermarket

Monday, July 6, 2009 - 10:56 AM | posted by admin

I was shopping in the Supermarket yesterday when something strange happened to me.

Perhaps I should preface the story by saying that I come from California- a land of freedom where grocery store ethics are almost nil. That said, I was browsing the fruit section on a Thursday night shopping trip.

I was shopping for myself and thus – trying to pick the best and smallest grape bunch from an assortment of monstrous bunches that I knew would go bad before I got the chance to eat them all. Now speaking as a single person from the land of supermarket freedom – I would say that I was within my bounds and those of common decency. And perhaps I was.

Until, that is, I tried to separate a beautiful portion off one large bunch of grapes. “Scusi!” “Excuse me miss!” The supermarket man said in Italian. “Non puoi fare cosi.” “You can’t do that,” he said “because if you pick off only the good parts, you’ll leave the parts no body wants.” That’s right I thought. Exactly. “The over-ripe ones,” he continued, “you can put in a torte.” Hmmm. I thought to myself. “That’s right mister, of course I should have thought of that.A torte.

Have you seen my kitchen?” I shouted in my head. “My oven is broken and my kitchen is always invaded by poor students driven from their even more pitiful kitchens to cook in mine. Plus my grandmother never taught me how to bake, she was nasty and she had arthritis. I can’t make a torte.” But on the outside, I coyly smiled and accepted his reprimand. Because really, I see his point. » Read more…

Tiramisù

Thursday, June 25, 2009 - 6:57 PM | posted by admin

Pull me up” is the translation of Tiramisù. For sure it refers to the strong caloric contribution, which is supposed to give an aphrodisiac help.

What is basic for this delicious dessert is the freshness – and safety – of the ingredients: Mascarpone, which is a cheese from Northern Italy with a high contents of fat and the eggs, which are usually raw.

Marcella Ansaldo suggests  a method for a “really safe” tiramisu. Here you can compare the original recipe with the safer method and a personal variation.

Ingredients: coffepoots

200 gr ( 7 Oz) Mascarpone cheese

2 eggs

2 tbs sugar

250 ml ( 1 cup) strong Italian coffe (better from an Italian coffee pot)

1 tbs Rhum

16 Savoiardi ( Lady’s fingers) or 30 Pavesini

1 tbs cocoa powder

pinch of salt

Procedure:

Pour the Rhum in the coffe. In a bowl beat the egg yolks with the sugar until fluffy. Add the Mascarpone and mix well.In a separate bowl whip up the egg white with a pinch of salt until firm and fold them into the cream.Dip the biscuits into the coffee and place them side by side on the bottom of a rectangular serving dish. Pour half of the cream over the biscuits and make a second layer of biscuits, dipped in the coffee. Cover the top with the left cream.Sprinkle the cocoa on top of the Tiramisù and refrigerate at least one hour before serving.
